“China has gone so far as to offer Taiwan a continued independent military as a special region of the country.” Reading the Wikipedia, did China really offer this? I could also read that as that particular politician floating the idea. I’m also not clear what you’d need to credibly motivate China to allow genuine autonomy, nor for that matter clear how much autonomy they really need.
